1. Encoding Speed
AVIF encoding (using libaom or SVT-AV1) requires substantially more CPU computing power and time than WebP. For real-time dynamic image generation on high-traffic servers, WebP remains the lighter, more responsive choice.
2. Decoding Performance on Low-End Devices
WebP has mature software decoding across a broad range of devices. AVIF can reduce bytes, but decode cost may be more noticeable on some older or low-power hardware, especially during repeated image-heavy interactions; measure representative devices and retain a WebP or JPEG fallback where that tradeoff matters.
